Music Program

At Guardian Lutheran School, music is an integral part of the overall curriculum. Our diverse program provides students an opportunity to participate in a variety of musical activities and events designed to enhance the development of their skills and to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord".

"Sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things." Psalm 98:1

Vocal Choirs

Cherub Choir - The Cherub Choir is comprised of students from our preschool and kindergarten classes and is a first step in developing musical skills, such as tune and memorization, and "making a joyful noise to the Lord". They sing at Sunday morning worship services and special school events throughout the year.

Children's Choir - The Children's Choir is open to children in grades one through four and seeks to increase the children's musical skills and their enjoyment of God's gift of music. Currently, the choir has over 50 children. They meet twice a week to practice and sing in worship services on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings once per month. Highlights of the year include participating in Guardian's Christmas concert and a Lutheran Music Festival.

School Chorus - The School Chorus is open to students in grades five through eight who have an interest in singing and improving their vocal skills. Choir membership is an important function for the worship of our Lord and the School Chorus has the special privilege of leading the congregation in hymns as well as singing special anthems of praise. The Chorus also has the unique opportunity to collaborate with other groups in Guardian's music ministry, such as Adult Choir, bell choir, and instrumental ensembles and participate in the Concordia Music Festival.

Instrumental Groups

Band - Guardian has a small, high quality band led by Mr. Richard Alder, a retired public school band director. Beginner band is open to 5th -8th grade students who desire to learn how to play and instrument  (Woodwinds, Brass or Percussion), with focus on proper technique and basic skills of note reading, rhythm, tempo and dynamics.  The band meets two afternoons per week for group lessons. Advanced band is comprised of 5th-8th grade students who have one or more years experience playing an instrument. This group meets twice per week to work on individual playing skills and to develop ensemble skills. Both bands perform at mini concerts during the Christmas season and in the Spring.

Handbell Choir - Guardian's handbell choir is made up of students from grades five through eight who are taught basic music reading and ringing techniques. They meet twice a week to rehearse and play regularly at school chapel services, and Advent and Lenten mid week services.  They also have opportunities to perform at the Guardian Talent Show and at the Concordia Music Festival. The handbell choir provides a unique opportunity for students to work together in a group setting and create beautiful music.

Musical Events

Students are also given an opportunity to showcase their vocal and instrumental skills at the Fine Arts Festival/School Musical (held on alternating years) and the annual Lutheran Solo/Ensemble competition. Guardian's vocal and handbell choirs also regularly provide music for worship services and participate in the Concordia Music Festival.
